The Cocktail Glass, aka The Martini Glass

The cocktail glass is often called a "martini glass" because its association with this classic drink.  The classic cocktail glass, or martini glass, has a stem that allows you to hold your cocktail without warming the drink.  From the stem, a martini glass opens to a wide "bird bath" or inverted cone shape. 

Some innovative designs have dispensed with the stem, favoring an ice bath to keep the drink at its desired temperature.  Swank Martini Company, always on the cutting edge of martini fashion, has incorporated this feature into their Chillin' martini glass.

The typical martini glass holds 3 - 8 ounces and is used serve a variety of cocktails, not just martinis, that are poured "straight up" or without ice.  In addition to a martini, a cocktail glass might be used to serve cocktails such as a Manhattan, gimlet, or Roy Rogers.
