The Blue on Blue Martini Recipe
If you want a cocktail that looks stunning in a clear martini glass, the blue-on-blue martini fits the bill. The curacao and bitters makes this martini recipe stand out on the palate, while the brilliant crystal blue color makes an eye catching presentation. - Johnnie
This cocktail receipe is a winner for both taste and presentation. You'll want to stick with a premium quality vodka, but you might save your most expensive stuff for Johnnie's classic martini since the curacao and Angostrua bitters will be the predominant flavors on your palate. In other words, you won't be able to enjoy the unique character of a super premium vodka because it will be probably be lost with the other ingredients.
Blue on Blue Martini Ingredients
- 6 parts vodka
- 1 part blue curacao
- 1 dash Angostura bitters
- Cocktail olive
Blue curacao is a sweet blue liqueur, distilled and flavored from the dried peel of bitter oranges. It can also contain distillates of lemons and curacao fruit, sugar and wine. The Caribbean island of Curacao is host to much of the fruit used in these liqueurs. This blue liqueur is what gives this blue martini it's distinctive color.
Angostrua aromatic bitters is a highly concentrated food and beverage flavouring. It is a unique and "secret" blend of natural herbs and spices and is used to flavour a wide variety of foods and drinks. The "secret" was developed in 1824 by Dr. J.G.B. Siegert, a Surgeon General in Simon Bolivar's army in Venezuela. He used his aromatic bitters to improve appetite and digestive well-being of the soldiers. The word "Angostura" came from the town of that name in Venezuela where Dr. Siegert was based.
Mixing The Cocktail and Selecting Martini Glasses
Remembering what Johnnie has taught you about mixing martinis, combine the liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with the olive. An alternative to the olive garnish would be a slice of citrus or a cocktail pick with citrus and a maraschino cherry.
Imagine this stunning blue cocktail poured in a chiller martini glass!
